Blog Comment Spam

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Spam is not permitted anywhere on this website. Someone from IP address 85.255.119.132 has been persistently attempting to post comments filled with weblinks. Stop it. You’re only wasting my time and yours.

Comments on Coppermine Photo Gallery, take 2

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Thanks to some idiot(s) that persistently posted links to unacceptable websites (actually, spam-like posting of links of any kind is prohibited everywhere on this site) as comments on the first saguaro picture in the Arizona 2002 album, I have turned off comments for “guests” in the photo gallery. You should be able to post comments by registering, although I haven’t tested that option, and no one has ever requested a registration in the several years I’ve used Coppermine to display my photo collection.

You can still rate photos (although no one has done that yet, either, since I had to reset them after a major glitch in a software “upgrade”).

If later versions of CPG include adequate anti-spam features, I will probably turn comments back on again, although I haven’t seen any useful ones in the five months they were permitted. :-|

Comments on Coppermine Photo Gallery

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Someone anonymously posted what amounted to “spam” comments in the Miscellaneous album in the photo gallery. After I deleted them (four of them), another appeared a few hours later. Therefore, I have turned off comments for that album. If this type of thing occurs in any other album, I will return the entire gallery to its former “no comments” state. I had turned them on in case some visitor might have something useful to add, or additional information about the subject of a photo. So far, nothing, except the spam.

I am also considering removing the Glamour Shots® photos. I’ve been nervous about copyright laws ever since posting them, so unless someone or something convinces me to keep them, I’ll probably remove them in a few days.

Small addition to Selectable Weather page

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

After quite a while of working on other stuff, I finally got around to making a slight addition to the Selectable Weather page a couple of days ago (June 5).  There is now a “Former homes” option, including all the places I’ve previously lived (Canton IL, Belleville IL, Bellevue NE, Moline IL, Ceres CA, and Alpena MI).  Once again, though, other things are still stealing priority, so work on the website is kind of slow….

E-mail link added to main navigation block

Friday, May 12th, 2006

After almost two years of cmsharpe.com, I have finally added an e-mail link to the “new” site.  It looks like the one on the old site, but is now on each “standard” page (excludes such things as this blog and the photo gallery) and no longer makes allowances for browsers with JavaScript turned off. It retains the anti-spam technique I borrowed several years ago for my old site. One other difference is that it no longer points to my Cox e-mail address, but rather to one based with cmsharpe.com.
The updated version of the Looney Tunes collection page is nearing completion. I still need to create an edit page and update the (PostgreSQL) database with the VHS and DVD titles that Stu & I own. I’ll probably also change the looney/index.php page to be similar to the Looney Tunes main page on my old site – a collection of Looney Links, so to speak, with one pointing to the Stu & Cheryl Collection page. Once that’s all done, the old MySQL-based version will be deleted.

Spanish Version of Main Page “Completed.” Revised Looney Tunes section started.

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

He terminado la traducción española de la página principal de este sitio. Je veux que français c’est le prochain. I hope I didn’t mangle the grammar too badly in those sentences! :-) Anyway, I’ve finished my translation of the site’s Main Page into Spanish (I’m sure it has bad translations, but hey, at least I tried!). French is next, I hope. Maybe someday I’ll add Chinese and German, but that’s a long way off, at the soonest.

The revised Looney Tunes pages are under development. I’m constructing the PostgreSQL tables for it, and have nary a clue as to how long it will be before the new pages go on-line.

Español

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

A Spanish version of parts of this website is under development, and French is planned soon. Perhaps I can add this to the “Plans for this site” paragraph on the front page…. To see the non-English version(s), you need to have your browser set to prefer Spanish (French later on), otherwise, it will default to English. I hope to provide further enhancements later, but don’t really have that much time right now.

The new and improved Looney Tunes page is also under development – I got the first PostgreSQL table done today, and hope to add another tomorrow. Then, we’ll need a PHP page to connect it all and make pretty XHTML tables. :)

Legend Improved in Severe Weather Outlook Page

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

The legend at the bottom of the Severe Weather Outlook page was somewhat unclear. It has been revised significantly, and is, I hope, more understandable. I also believe I have permanently fixed a bug that allowed a “245%” chance of hail through to the chart. The value of 200 is used internally in the chart preparation to flag a “signficant” event. It was supposed to have been removed before display.

Today is the 7th anniversary of the F5 tornado that devastated parts of the south side of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, especially Moore.

BBC added to World News page

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

After agreeing to BBC’s rather lengthy Terms and Conditions, I added several of their RSS feeds to the new World News page. A couple of other minor issues were fixed on that page, including a change that will eventually be made across the entire site: the page’s title tag was changed to remove “cmsharpe.com”. That should make it easier to use various pages of the site in tabbed browsers, such as Firefox. Hint… hint. :-)

Four objectives completed – sort of

Monday, May 1st, 2006

For a long time, I have wanted to (1) make the News & Weather page into two separate pages, both (2) providing selectable sources of information (selectable from my lists, that is – the sources are not unlimited). As of tonight, the pages are now separate! Both the weather page (which currently points to the selectable-weather page and the Severe Weather Outlook page) and the news page (which is a selectable news page) are now (3) linked directly from any “standard” cmsharpe.com page (those that have the logo across the top). The lists of selectable items will probably grow with time as I find new and interesting sources of news and weather. For now, at least it’s all functional (I hope – testing went well tonight, at least). :-)

The fourth objective (4) was completed earlier. A CSS bug had rendered the Blazer browser (I have a Palm T|X PDA) unable to render ( :-) ) some of the CSS on this website. The bug appears to have been fixed for all pages except the “Old Spot”.
