Maine (October 2012)

IMG_3331_28129.jpg

Stu and I traveled to New England in early/mid-October, 2012. We visited two main locations: the Museum of Science in Boston MA, and Acadia National Park in Maine. Of the more than 1,060 photos I took, 56 appear here as representative samples. These photos were all taken with my Canon PowerShot SX230 HS camera. As with most of the albums here, the photos have been reduced in size: these are 1,024 pixels long by 768 wide (regardless of orientation). Latitude and longitude values are provided, generally with an accuracy within about 10-20 meters, except indoor shots. You can copy the values and paste them into Google Maps/Earth (or any GIS software, perhaps with minor modifications) to see the locations. The locations were mostly provided by the camera, but my Garmin eTrex HCx filled in where the camera's GPS wasn't able to get a good enough signal. Indoor locations were estimated as noted.

Spain (July-August 2008)

IMG_0553_(Medium).JPG

Stu and I left for Spain on July 22, 2008, and returned to Oklahoma on August 3. Of the approximately 1,300 photos I took, about three dozen were good/interesting enough to display here. These photos (and one video) were all taken with my new Canon SD890 IS camera. As with most of the albums here, the photos have been re-sized or cropped to 800 x 600 pixels. Latitude and longitude values are provided, generally with an accuracy within about 10-20 meters (about 200-500 meters for shots from a moving vehicle). You can copy the values and paste them into Google Maps/Earth (or any GIS software, perhaps with minor modifications) to see the locations. Unless otherwise noted, the tracking information was derived from my Garmin eTrex Vista Cx track log.

Ontario (May-June 2005)

P5302241.JPG

Stu went to Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada for seven weeks of radar training. I was there for most of the first three weeks of that time. We also took a weekend trip to Hawkesbury, Ontario, and visited nearby sites from there. Here is a small sample of the nearly 800 photos I took during that trip (Camera: Olympus 5050Z). An incomplete (under construction) map is available at: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.cmsharpe.com/test/Canada2005.kml

Louisiana (April 2005)

P4211784.jpg

Here are some of the 164 photos taken during a short visit to Lafayette, Louisiana. The camera is an Olympus 5050Z, often using a 2X telephoto lens (used for most of the bird photos).

Maid of the Mists292 views2005-05-21
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

This 33-second QuickTime video shows the "Maid of the Mists" tour boat in motion. Sort of. Toward the end of the video, you can compare its (slow) forward motion against the rail near the bottom of the video. Cautions: Noisy audio. Requires QuickTime. 10.4 MB download.

This palm tree was plainly visible from the Lorca Rock Festival. This image, after major photo editing, became the "dot" in the current (as of early 2009) cmsharpe.com logo (the image in the upper-left corner of most of this website, excluding the blog and this photo gallery).

Paradise! ... actually, this is the small town of Paradise, Michigan - in winter!

(This is a newly-scanned image, directly from the film negative, plus some photo enhancements. It replaces the image that was scanned from the corresponding photo - with an inferior scanner.)

Kakabeka Falls. We discovered this awesome waterfall by looking at postcards that were for sale at the motel where we stayed in Thunder Bay!

Acutally, this view is from the first landing of the stairs on the fire lookout station at the summit of Beech Mountain. This is looking SE, toward Southwest Harbor, Maine, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

We climbed to the top of Beech Mountain from the north side. This fire lookout station was closed, except up to the first landing on the stairs. These pine cones were unusually photogenic, against the bright blue sky. This photo was taken very near the summit of Beech Mountain (just north of the summit), and, I believe, within sight of the fire lookout station.

Spring Trail Meets Carriage Road438 views2012-10-12

Stu and I took the Spring Trail up as far as the steps (shown here) go, decided it wasn't for us (at least given the amount of time we had left to hike), and ended up going the other way on the Spring Trail (toward the Jordan Pond House). This photo was taken near the southeastern-most extent of Mount Penobscot.
