Maine (October 2012)
|

|

|
|
Stu and I traveled to New England in early/mid-October, 2012. We visited two main locations: the Museum of Science in Boston MA, and Acadia National Park in Maine. Of the more than 1,060 photos I took, 56 appear here as representative samples. These photos were all taken with my Canon PowerShot SX230 HS camera. As with most of the albums here, the photos have been reduced in size: these are 1,024 pixels long by 768 wide (regardless of orientation). Latitude and longitude values are provided, generally with an accuracy within about 10-20 meters, except indoor shots. You can copy the values and paste them into Google Maps/Earth (or any GIS software, perhaps with minor modifications) to see the locations. The locations were mostly provided by the camera, but my Garmin eTrex HCx filled in where the camera's GPS wasn't able to get a good enough signal. Indoor locations were estimated as noted.

Spain (July-August 2008)

Stu and I left for Spain on July 22, 2008, and returned to Oklahoma on August 3. Of the approximately 1,300 photos I took, about three dozen were good/interesting enough to display here. These photos (and one video) were all taken with my new Canon SD890 IS camera. As with most of the albums here, the photos have been re-sized or cropped to 800 x 600 pixels. Latitude and longitude values are provided, generally with an accuracy within about 10-20 meters (about 200-500 meters for shots from a moving vehicle). You can copy the values and paste them into Google Maps/Earth (or any GIS software, perhaps with minor modifications) to see the locations. Unless otherwise noted, the tracking information was derived from my Garmin eTrex Vista Cx track log.

Feliz Viaje186 views2002-04-09
Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, México
Feliz Viaje sign on Highway 8 at the edge of town. For those of you who don't speak Spanish, that translates (loosely) to: "Have a nice trip." Sonoyta is a town on the Sonora side of the international border.

Cloud Base232 views2012-10-10
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.3030,-68.3416
The clouds were so low that we entered the base of the overcast layer at approximately 130 m above mean sea level (this photo was at 138 m, according to Google Earth). The clouds give a slightly eerie look to the scene.

Boquillas Canyon193 views2001-06-28
Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA
Stuart is dwarfed by the huge walls of Boquillas Canyon. The cliff on the right is in Mexico. Yes, that's the Rio Grande again. The temperature that afternoon was approximately 105º F (41º C)!

This, as far as I can tell, is the primary building of Parliament in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - the seat of the Canadian government.

Bright Red Trees296 views2012-10-09
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.4023,-68.2394
These two bright red trees (maples, I assume) glowed brightly in the afternoon sun. This picture was taken from a carriage road in the north part of the park, and was looking south. This was the day we rented bicycles to ride through the park.

Narrow road347 views2008-07-27
east of Huesa, Jaén, AndalucÃa, Spain
N37.7604 W3.0289 (approx.)
Narrow roads are common in Spain (and, I assume, most of Europe), but this is the main road (actually, it's the ONLY road -- and it's two-way!) through the small community of Belerdas. We went this way because the highway from Huesa to Quesada was closed due to construction, and this was the indicated detour from Huesa. Looking E.

Pine Cones625 views2012-10-13
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA

These pine cones were unusually photogenic, against the bright blue sky. This photo was taken very near the summit of Beech Mountain (just north of the summit), and, I believe, within sight of the fire lookout station.Oct 31, 2012

Spring Trail Meets Carriage Road551 views2012-10-12
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.3212,-68.2605
Stu and I took the Spring Trail up as far as the steps (shown here) go, decided it wasn't for us (at least given the amount of time we had left to hike), and ended up going the other way on the Spring Trail (toward the Jordan Pond House). This photo was taken near the southeastern-most extent of Mount Penobscot.Oct 31, 2012
