Maine (October 2012)

IMG_3331_28129.jpg

Stu and I traveled to New England in early/mid-October, 2012. We visited two main locations: the Museum of Science in Boston MA, and Acadia National Park in Maine. Of the more than 1,060 photos I took, 56 appear here as representative samples. These photos were all taken with my Canon PowerShot SX230 HS camera. As with most of the albums here, the photos have been reduced in size: these are 1,024 pixels long by 768 wide (regardless of orientation). Latitude and longitude values are provided, generally with an accuracy within about 10-20 meters, except indoor shots. You can copy the values and paste them into Google Maps/Earth (or any GIS software, perhaps with minor modifications) to see the locations. The locations were mostly provided by the camera, but my Garmin eTrex HCx filled in where the camera's GPS wasn't able to get a good enough signal. Indoor locations were estimated as noted.

Spain (July-August 2008)

IMG_0553_(Medium).JPG

Stu and I left for Spain on July 22, 2008, and returned to Oklahoma on August 3. Of the approximately 1,300 photos I took, about three dozen were good/interesting enough to display here. These photos (and one video) were all taken with my new Canon SD890 IS camera. As with most of the albums here, the photos have been re-sized or cropped to 800 x 600 pixels. Latitude and longitude values are provided, generally with an accuracy within about 10-20 meters (about 200-500 meters for shots from a moving vehicle). You can copy the values and paste them into Google Maps/Earth (or any GIS software, perhaps with minor modifications) to see the locations. Unless otherwise noted, the tracking information was derived from my Garmin eTrex Vista Cx track log.

Ontario (May-June 2005)

P5302241.JPG

Stu went to Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada for seven weeks of radar training. I was there for most of the first three weeks of that time. We also took a weekend trip to Hawkesbury, Ontario, and visited nearby sites from there. Here is a small sample of the nearly 800 photos I took during that trip (Camera: Olympus 5050Z). An incomplete (under construction) map is available at: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.cmsharpe.com/test/Canada2005.kml

Louisiana (April 2005)

P4211784.jpg

Here are some of the 164 photos taken during a short visit to Lafayette, Louisiana. The camera is an Olympus 5050Z, often using a 2X telephoto lens (used for most of the bird photos).

Smart car218 views2005-05-29
Montréal, Québec, Canada

This is Stu, standing next to a "Smart Car" we found parked near the Asian district of Montréal. Compared to other vehicles (in 2005, at least!), this is a very small car.

Fire Lookout Station on Beech Mountain212 views2012-10-11
Near Southwest Harbor (Mount Desert Island), Maine, USA
44.2858,-68.3117

This is a highly zoomed photo of the fire lookout station at the summit of Beech Mountain. Two days later, we hiked to the top of Beech Mountain and climbed halfway up the stairs on this station (that was all that was open to the public). This photo was taken from the Sea Princess. See the photo of both the lookout station and the boat in this album.

(Parque Natural de la Sierra de Cazorla, Segura, y las Villas) These tall pines were typical of the last part of Sendero Cerrada del Utrero (the 1.7-km "easy" trail we hiked).

Lorca castle370 views2008-07-26
Lorca, Murcia, Murcia, Spain
N37.6772 W1.7087 (est. from Google Earth)

We went to Lorca for the Lorca Rock Festival, which took place the evenings of the 25th and 26th. During the day on the 26th, we toured the castle. And no, the guy on the left side of the photo is not real. Looking E.

Great Sand Dunes Natl Monument, near Alamosa, Colorado, USA

They're not just good sand dunes. :-) The small specks you see are people on the massive sand dunes.

Snow-capped mountains167 views2004-09-06
Molas Pass, southwest of Silverton, Colorado, USA

This scene is fairly typical of the high passes in southwest Colorado in September. Molas Pass is between Coal Bank Pass and the town of Silverton.

Hoary marmot208 views2004-09-07
Engineer Pass Road, near Ouray, Colorado, USA

As we descended from our failed attempt to scale Engineer Pass, we encountered this hoary marmot along the road.

Snow192 views2004-09-07
Cinnamon Pass Road, near Lake City, Colorado, USA

This is the snowy scene just short of Cinnamon Pass (eastbound). Unlike Engineer Pass, which was too scary to cross (due to snow), the road across Cinnamon Pass was in good shape.

Acutally, this view is from the first landing of the stairs on the fire lookout station at the summit of Beech Mountain. This is looking SE, toward Southwest Harbor, Maine, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.3109,-68.3454

We climbed to the top of Beech Mountain from the north side. This fire lookout station was closed, except up to the first landing on the stairs. According to Google Earth, this photo was taken at an elevation of 258 m. See also the photo of this fire lookout that was taken from the Sea Princess scenic cruise boat, also in this album.

Pine Cones615 views2012-10-13
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.3114,-68.3454

These pine cones were unusually photogenic, against the bright blue sky. This photo was taken very near the summit of Beech Mountain (just north of the summit), and, I believe, within sight of the fire lookout station.

Spring Trail Meets Carriage Road543 views2012-10-12
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.3212,-68.2605

Stu and I took the Spring Trail up as far as the steps (shown here) go, decided it wasn't for us (at least given the amount of time we had left to hike), and ended up going the other way on the Spring Trail (toward the Jordan Pond House). This photo was taken near the southeastern-most extent of Mount Penobscot.

This photo was taken from a carriage road to the west of the south part of Jordan Pond, looking S. The water in the foreground is Long Pond (but not the Long Pond in other photos in this album!).
