We climbed the lower southwest side of Beech Mountain. This scene shows how green and rain forest-like this area is, somewhat in contrast with much of the rest of the park.

Acadia National Park, Maine, USA

These ferns appeared to be growing out of the rocks--a fairly common sight in Acadia N. P. This is in the lower elevations of the far south side of Beech Mountain.

This view is toward the west from the south part of Beech Mountain, looking toward the south edge of Long Pond (our rental car was parked close to the red tree at the south edge of the pond).

Cloud Base214 views2012-10-10
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA

The clouds were so low that we entered the base of the overcast layer at approximately 130 m above mean sea level (this photo was at 138 m, according to Google Earth). The clouds give a slightly eerie look to the scene.

Unusual Fungus213 views2012-10-10
Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
44.3020,-68.3447
This fungus was unusual in the sense that I've not seen it elsewhere (except for a few other specimens in Acadia N. P.), and that it looks a lot different than most of the other fungus we found. This one was near the south edge of Beech Mountain. The thick clouds and tree canopy left very little light for this photo, and the 1/5 s shot was taken hand-held.

This scene looks something like a rainforest. It's a short distance (about 100 m) southeast of the south shore of Long Pond.

This scene is along the short Wonder Land trail in the far south part of Mount Desert Island. The red leaves are, I assume, sumac.

The clouds broke only briefly, and let us see this lovely scene with various evergreen trees silhouetted against the multicolored sky.

This lighthouse is very near the southernmost point on Mount Desert Island. It was late in civil twilight when this photo was taken.
