Illinois 2013
Quad Cities
Thursday, November 21 through Monday, November 26, 2013
I drove (with Stu) to Illinois to attend the retirement celebration for the now-former Chair of the Augustana College Geography Department in Rock Island, Illinois. Along the way we also visited Jefferson City MO (Capitol), various other points of interest in the Quad Cities (IL side), and the Garmin International headquarters building in Olathe KS.
The GPX files have been edited only to remove extraneous points and obvious errors.
Also of note: this is our first trip tracked with a Garmin Monterra GPS receiver.
Overview
- Overview map—This is a composite map of all the GPS tracks on a blank U.S. states map, with the states we visited highlighted in yellow.
- All GPS tracks (Monterra) / view map—The whole trip, including walks, driving,.... (May take a few seconds to load.)
The trip
- November 21: GPX / view map—The drive (in darkness, occasional drizzle, and strong north winds) from Oklahoma City OK to Joplin MO.
- November 22: GPX / view map—The drive Joplin MO to Moline IL. This includes our stop at Jefferson City to see the Capitol and surrounding buildings. Note: about 8 minutes of tracks from the Nüvi 3790T were inserted immediately following the Capitol visit, due to a data loss on the Monterra (probably user error with the still-unfamiliar user interface).
- November 23: GPX / view map—Driving between the hotel and Augustana College, then between the hotel and South Park Mall.
- November 23 (bus tour): GPX / view map—The bus tour we took as part of the retirement activities. We stopped at multiple locations (among them: John Deere Pavilion, Kone Centre, future site of the Western Illinois University's Quad City campus, MetroLink, Quad Citiy Botanical Center, and Schweibert Park, all in Rock Island and Moline IL).
- November 24: GPX / view map—The drive from Moline IL to Olathe KS. This includes drive-bys of my former homes in Moline (3402 47th Ave A and 3106 15th St A), plus a visit to nearby Prospect Park. The separate drive from the hotel to dinner (and back) in Olathe is also included.
- November 25: GPX / view map—The drive from Olathe KS back to Oklahoma City OK. This includes a drive-by of Garmin International headquarters in Olathe. Every dedicated GPS receiver I have ever owned (up to this time) has been a Garmin unit.
