Maine 2012
Boston MA, Acadia National Park
Saturday October 6 through Sunday October 14
After being shortchanged on time at Acadia National Park last year, due to some serious underselling by the brochures, Stu and I decided to go back again this October to Acadia NP and coastal Maine. We also spent a day at the Museum of Science in Boston MA. My Garmin nüvi 3790T collected GPX files for our driving (technically, Stu did all the driving), while my Garmin eTrex Vista HCx handled flights, hiking, biking, and the scenic cruise.
A map of our hiking, biking, and boating is available here.
Except as noted, the GPX files have been edited only to remove extraneous points and obvious errors.
Overview
- Overview map—This is a composite map of all the GPS tracks on a blank U.S. states map, with the states we visited highlighted in yellow. (Close-up of eastern New England)
- All GPS tracks / view map—The whole trip. (May take a few seconds to load. Also, there is no airline track from Chicago to Boston, because of a middle seat, and the associated lack of a GPS signal.)
Saturday, October 6
- GPX / view map—KOKC to KORD to KBOS (Oklahoma City OK to Chicago [O'Hare] IL to Boston MA). This is the flight from Oklahoma City to Boston. Unfortunately, I had a middle seat on the second leg, and could not get a good GPS signal, so KORD to KBOS is not available.
- GPX / view map—our drive to the hotel in Andover MA. There are tunnels around Logan Intl. Airport, so we frequently lost the GPS signal there. Basically, we took I-90 to I-93.
Sunday, October 7
- GPX / view map—our drive from the hotel in Andover MA to the Museum of Science in Boston MA and back. The track also includes our difficult search for a restaurant (dinner) in the Andover area.
Monday, October 8
- GPX / view map—our drive from the hotel in Andover MA to our hotel in Ellsworth ME. We stopped at a few locations along the way, including Bath and Rockland ME.
- GPX / view map—places where we got out and walked (switch to grayscale to see the locations, or just zoom in on Bath, Rockland, and/or Ellsworth, Maine).
Tuesday, October 9
- GPX / view map—day one at Acadia NP (driving).
- GPX / view map—day one at Acadia NP (biking and walking).
- GPX / view map—just the bike ride (starts at northernmost point, then west side, then east sides of loops, and return to start).
Wednesday, October 10
- GPX / view map—day two at Acadia NP (driving). We stopped at the visitor center on the way into the park.
- GPX / view map—day two at Acadia NP (hiking and walking).
- GPX / view map—hike #1, Long Pond and lower south part of Beech Mountain (starts near the midpoint of the southeast shore of Long Pond, and proceeds clockwise, plus a spur up toward Beech Mountain). The weather was cloudy and rainy, so we abandoned this hike when incoming rain was expected to make the steep part of the trail hazardous.
- GPX / view map—hike #2, Wonder Land (round trip, road to coast, counterclockwise at coast).
Thursday, October 11
- GPX / view map—day three at Acadia NP (driving).
- GPX / view map—day three at Acadia NP (scenic cruise, hiking, and walking).
- GPX / view map—the scenic cruise (clockwise, starting/ending at Northeast Harbor).
- GPX / view map—hike around the Upper and Lower Hadlock Ponds (starts/ends north of Upper Hadlock Pond, and proceeds generally clockwise).
Friday, October 12
- GPX / view map—day four at Acadia NP (driving). Path includes a stop at RainWise (weather instrument seller) in Bar Harbor.
- GPX / view map—day four at Acadia NP (hiking and walking).
- GPX / view map—hike in the Jordan Pond area (starts and ends at Jordan Pond House, just south of Jordan Pond, then path goes north, west of Jordan Pond, then east across the north edge of the pond, a spur toward The Bubbles, then back west and south along the pond shore, then northwest toward the south end of Mt. Penobscot, and back to the south edge of Jordan Pond).
Saturday, October 13
- GPX / view map—day five at Acadia NP (driving), plus the return to Andover MA.
- GPX / view map—day five at Acadia NP: hike up the north side of Beech Mountain (begins/ends at northeast tip, proceeds up the mountain to summit, briefly down southwest side, then return).
Sunday, October 14
- GPX / view map—our drive from the hotel in Andover to the Boston (Logan) Airport. Again, tunnels in the airport area caused occasional signal loss on the GPS.
- GPX / view map—KBOS to KORD to KOKC (Boston MA to Chicago [O'Hare] IL to Oklahoma City OK). This is the pair of flights from Boston to Oklahoma City.
